Philoptohos News for May 2003
Once again, we, the Ladies Philoptochos Society ‘St. Barbara’
ended our 2002–2003 year with much success and great anticipation of what
is to come.
Our Easter Bread Sale was a sell-out! Also, the St. George
Coffee Hour following the Divine Liturgy was enjoyed by many of our parishioners.
We now look forward to our annual Spring Luncheon, which will be held
on Sunday, June 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pantagis Renaissance in Scotch Plains,
NJ.
Throughout the year, we scheduled and successfully executed
the various activities fulfilling our national and diocesan obligations.
Visiting the shut-ins is an ongoing responsibility for our members. Cooking
for the Homeless continues to take place every month and, through Warming
of America, we distribute afghans to the homeless, the hospitals, and
the nursing homes. In addition to the afghans, the Ladies sew baby blankets,
which are distributed to the neighboring hospitals.
Every year, we bring the St. George Community together
by sponsoring the Vasilopita, the Lenten Luncheon, and the Coffee Hour
following the Divine Liturgy. Another service to the community is the
annual preparation and distribution of the St. George Christmas Card.
We continue to benefit from the Matching Gifts Program and the United
Way Program in which our parishioners participate through their employment.
We thank these parishioners for their assistance and urge others to do
the same. Also, at this time of the year, we are all involved in the preparations
for our St. George Festival! The Philoptochos Calendar is very full.
We encourage all the ladies of the St. George community
to join us by becoming members of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Together,
we enjoy a unique fellowship as we work together to fulfill the many needs
and obligations presented to us.
Please note that for the month of May, there will NOT
be a meeting of the general membership. Only the newly elected Board of
Governors will meet on Saturday, May 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Memorial Room
to elect the officers for the 2003–2005 term.
To the entire St. George Community, we wish a most successful
St. George Festival!
